Dove Armando sold at auction for 1.25 million euros
Armando is now enjoying a well-deserved rest
A pigeon named Armando was auctioned in Belgium for a record € 1.25 million ($ 1.42 million).
Auction house Pipa named Armando the best long-range Belgian pigeon in history. He even received the nickname "Lewis Hamilton among the pigeons" in honor of the British Formula 1 driver.
The previous record for the cost of a pigeon at an auction was 376 thousand euros. According to Pipa's employees, he was beaten within the first day after Armando was put up for auction.
The champion pigeon, which turns five this year, no longer races, enjoys a well-deserved rest and has already fathered several pigeons. Pigeons in Uganda https://jiji.ug/71-pigeons
"It was something unreal, just incredible," - as Nicolaas Giselbrecht, CEO of the Pipa auction (short for Pigeon Paradise - "Pigeon Paradise"), described in a conversation with the BBC the moment when Armando was offered more than a million euros.
“We never dreamed of such a price. We thought to receive from 400 to 500 thousand euros, but only dreamed of 600 thousand,” he says.
Armando turns five this year
Nikolaas Giselbrecht said that two buyers from China were bargaining with each other, and rates rose from 532 thousand to 1.25 million euros in just an hour.
According to him, the usual price for a specially trained pigeon participating in pigeon races is about 2.5 thousand euros.
But Armando is no ordinary pigeon. He won the last three races of his career - the 2018 Ace Pigeon Championship, the 2019 Pigeon Olympics and the Angoulême race.
Armando has no shortage of fans. Fred Vankailli, president of the local pigeon fan association in Pervez, told the Belgian television station RTBF that Armando is the "Lewis Hamilton among the pigeons" and that this bird is one of the best in the history of the sport.
Although racing is behind Armando, Nikolaas Giselbrecht says racing pigeons can continue to produce offspring until they are around 10 years old and live up to 20 years.
